Troll Hill (Troldhaugen)

Edvard Grieg was only 1 meter 52 cm tall (4-1/2 feet), and his wife Nina was also short. So when he built his villa outside Bergen, he ironically called it Troldhaugen, since trolls are supposed to be very big.
Besides the villa, he built a little hut for composing. He sat on a thick book of Mozart sonatas while playing piano.

Saturday, I went there for a piano concert as part of the Bergen International Festival. The pianist was Irina Zahharenkova, who played some Grieg, some Mozart and some Beethoven. The setting was fabulous!

Grieg's villa was too small for concerts, so they built the Troldsalen into the side of the hill, with a sod roof, and with the audience facing the windows. Wow!

It is still sunny and warm here. It's supposed to get into the 70's this week. According to the tour driver on the bus to Troldhaugen, the thermometer on the bus said 27 C. We believed it, since the air was not flowing in there! I explored some more this weekend. The water was so smooth, that all the reflections were beautiful. I also got together with my friend from Slovakia for chocolate and wine/coffee at a cafe called Moliere's on Saturday night. It was a very nice weekend.

  1. You're just listening to all sorts of beautiful music. Troldsomething, not troldhaugen is certainly spectacular.
