Happy Halloween!

Halloween is a fairly new thing here in Norway. But it's catching on!

Last night, I went to a place in Knarvik for a Halloween party that was sponsored by work. I got there at 6 pm, when the e-mail said it started. Guess what? That was when the kids' party started. It was great fun!! They had a smoke machine, a bubble machine, and music videos on a big screen including some karaoke. The kids were all dressed in traditional storebought costumes, including two Hulks, Darth Vader, several witches and princesses, a bunny, and a werewolf. They were SOOO excited! They ran around the room screeching for two hours. Once, they almost all stood still. That was when the music video was from the Simpsons. The one after that was a japanamation one to the song "Brown-Eyed Girl" that they also watched. The next one started with sexy women's legs, and the kids immediately went back to running and screeching.

They had brownies, cola, and candy from a trick candy dish. Sugar High! The candy dish was a pumpkin with a witch guarding it, and when the kid reached in, the witch would GRAB at them with a maniacal cackle and flashing eyes. The thing was, it only worked when it was under the bright spotlight on the counter. The kids didn't figure that out, so it would grab/cackle some times but not others. They couldn't keep away from it, even after it was long empty.

When they got balloons to play with, they "headed" them like soccer balls more than they threw them.

Now I know why Norwegians have such excellent American accents. Even at that young age, they were singing karaoke with American songs.

The adult party, by comparison, was a dud. Not a single costume and no treats! Also, no screeching. Oh well, it was nice to talk to people. I took the bus home, and quite a few costumed young people got on and off. Downtown Bergen was pretty busy, with two fish & chips stands set up and a street musician. The weather cooperated. It was crystal clear with no wind, with the thermometer right at freezing.

  1. Well it sounds like your weather was better than Seattle's. After a long stretch of sunny days, it rained most of the day on Friday but eased off for the evening. It was wet, but the kids don't really care! I so enjoy reading about your travels, thank you for taking the time to share. Nancy

  2. Nancy is right, it looks like we're getting into fall form in the Seattle area. I will say, however, that the temperature has been above normal over the last few weeks. Of course, it's really going to be warm for Tami and me next week as we're actually taking a "real" vacation and going on a Mexican Riviera cruise for a week. Yeah, I know, it ain't Europe but we've got a kid in college. That will come later.

As I mentioned, I really love reading your posts. Enjoyed the North Sea Trail Adventure and your take on Halloween Sweden style.

I'm still in AOG Project Management, still with a foot in the Six Sigma world, although not nearly to the extent as before. cvow is still a good friend despite our political differences.

Thanks for putting my little ol' BowlingJoe blog in your favorites. That's very nice. Yours will remain in my favorites as well.

And, yeah, you can count on us being in touch when we finally make it back to Europe.

    Joe
