Snowy Valentine's Day

Bergen has had a very unusual spell of snow. Usually it rains, doesn't snow! So check out how beautiful the mountains are in snow. These pictures courtesy of Ed, who being retired, gets to run out and take advantage of sunny days.

He was up there on Tuesday, with all the other 50's, 60's and 70 year olds. We went up this morning, Valentine's Saturday, and had the whole mountain to ourselves till 11 am. Then there were all ages. Most people, including toddlers, are cross-country skiing. Dads and granddads are towing sleds uphill with kids on them, too. You should have seen the line at the bottom of the funicular at 1 pm, when we got back down, all with skis and sleds!
Now, can I make this entertaining? I did not pass my driver's test. Not entertaining? Must be revenge for passing my Washington State one when half of the Fairchild folks failed the first try. Maybe next month...
Meanwhile, watch out for driver training cars in Bergen!

  1. Great photos, Ed! And Pilla, if it's any consolation, I highly doubt that those people who administer driving tests in Norway could even come close to passing a Six Sigma Black Belt exam.

  2. That is entertaining -- and brought back fond memories of England. The standard was that when you moved to Olde Blighty, if you paid for a few driving lessons and then took the test, you passed it. If you -- like many, many Field Reps who had by God driven all over the world and don't need any darned lessons didn't take them, then you failed. Without fail. Those were the folks that we made sure found out that Claudia and I -- and Kiersti who had never driven in the US prior to the move -- all passed with flying colors on the first go -- after heeding the local advice and taking our lessons. It was such a perfect correlation that we were quite sure the driving examiners and driving instructors were all related, but we could not find data to support that hypothesis.

Actually, it is the little things that get you -- such as you NEVER "hand over hand" when turning the wheel, you ALWAYS stop far enough back from a car such that you can see the bottom of the tyres of the car in front, you ALWAYS pull on the hand brake whenever stopped from ore than five seconds --even in a line of cars at a stop light -- plus there was "reversing around a corner" -- somethings Americans are genetically unable to do properly, 3-point turns, knowing which lane to enter when turning unto a four lane road, etc.

I was only pulled over once in three years in England, and that was by an officer who noticed I was driving very carefully and under speed limit, and she wanted to know if I had perhaps been in the pub a bit long. (I was driving speed limit because I had a television in the boot!"

  3. I loved Ed's pictures. Have you seen the Ice Hotel or gone to the Ice Musical fest? They had an article on MSN about them and thye looked interesting. I don't think I want to sleep there but would be interesting to see. Connie
