Buekorps Battalions, a spring tradition

Bergen has a unique tradition - the Buekorps Battalions. They're mostly boys, but I've seen girls. They are run by the boys for the boys. They are known mainly for marching and drumming. But the alumni are frequently asked to perform, too. They can sing and play other instruments. We saw them in an Advent ceremony this year. So when we heard the drums outside our apartment Sunday, we were out the door and after them to see what was up.

They marched up the street to a parking lot. The alumni lined the road. The Nordnes Battalion marched by them, saluting. The Nordnes kids lined up in front of a building. Then a smaller group from a different battalion marched in, did some maneuvers in the parking lot, and then faced the Nordnes Battalion. The leaders shouted speeches at each other. The crowd laughed, so they may have been insulting each other or bragging about their battalions.

But they weren't done. Another small group from another battalion marches in and repeats the ceremony. About then, it started raining and we left them to their fun. When you come visit, we could visit the Buekorps museum, if you're interested.
