What Deanna Saw...

Deanna and Varg Veum, Private Detective.

Our favorite daughter Deanna was here to visit for 2 weeks. (She's our only daughter, too. And Ed's my favorite husband.) She has posted a zillion pictures of Bergen, and Oslo, too, on Picasa. What makes it really really cool is how much effort she put into placing the pictures of Bergen onto a map. You click on the place and it brings up the first picture from that place in her album. She has made it public, so you can all tour Bergen vicariously.

So you may be asking, who the heck is Varg Veum? Why, he is Bergen's movie star and best-selling book character. There are 6 movies out based on a series of books. They are set in Bergen, and star Varg Veum, Private Eye. They are really good movies, but I don't know if you can get them in US DVD format (yet). Deanna's standing next to his statue outside the building where his office is supposed to be. She wants to know when San Francisco is going to put up a statue about the Maltese Falcon.

I asked her what was different about public transportation, i.e. buses and trains, between Bergen and San Francisco, which also has cool mass transit. She said 1) Bergen has a lot less iPods, and 2) Bergen has a lot more sleeping. She figures it's 1) people are not trying to surround themselves in a privacy cocoon, and 2) people aren't worried about being robbed if they aren't constantly on alert. There was a 3) with no explanation - there are a lot more headphones instead of ear buds in Bergen.

I talked her into bringing some knitting and we had fun with that. She brought yarn from Germany that was a gift, yarn from California that she bought, and we hit the yarn stores here. The clerk at one suggested some yarn from California! They laughed about how silly that would be to buy. She is knitting a log cabin blanket with yarn from all three countries. I finished my first pair of socks while she was here, plus my second knit cap following Elizabeth Zimmerman's DVD instructions. The second sock and the second cap were better than the first. :)

My feet are warm, but whether because of the wool or the wild colors, I can't say.

  1. Thanks for your comments on BowlingJoe, Pilla. SF is such a great town. I hope your daughter enjoys living there as much as we enjoyed visiting.

Sounds like you all had a wonderful time in Bergen while she was visiting. I looked at her pictures...she took an incredible amount of them!
