Celebrating the longest days of the year

Sunset after 11 pm

We may not be in the land of the midnight sun, but we are in the land of the midnight twilight! Last weekend, we took a midnight hike with Katarina, up Floyen on a path I hadn't taken before. We left at 9 pm and got back after midnight. It was lovely, but really windy.
The troll in the Floyen playground is back! He had a runny nose.

Then Wednesday, the 23rd, we went to watch the barrel burning for St. Hans eve. Norwegians used to burn bonfires on midsummer night, but the church decided that pagan celebration had to stop. In the manner of the church over the centuries, they looked for someor thing from the Bible to substitute for the pagan fun. John the Baptist, that's it! His birthday was supposed to be June 24th, darn close to the solstice. So there you have it.

4-story tall pile of barrels, with partying on land and sea while it burns
Ed's a hot-head!
