South America! With Deanna!

This is Deanna's big vacation year! We are spending our every-other-year vacation trip in Peru and Brazil this time. Machu Picchu was the big draw, but there are lots of experiences to be had.

First, a big shout-out to Vandita for putting me up the night before my flight to Lima. The travel agent, not too familiar with Norway, booked me from Sandefjord. I, being more familiar with Norway, should have paid the change fee to fly from Bergen.  But no, I figured the 7 hour train ride to Oslo was cheaper than the change fee, plus I get to visit Vandita! Loved the visit. One detail I forgot about - the one hour taxi ride at night rates to get TO the airport from Vandita´s. Big hole in that money-saving plan. :'(

Deanna and I met in Lima, capital city. More people live in that city than in all of Norway - 9+ million. The big draw for us was the culinary tour. Peru has more kinds of fruit than you can believe - so our first stop was for a lucuma smoothie. Then on to Cafe Bisetti for really good  organic coffee.
Separating beans by hand...

We walked across the Bridge of Sighs (great name) in Barranco. Colorful neighborhood.
Then on to the market, Mercado Municipal San Isidro, absolutely crammed full of fruits, vegetables, and seafood.
Now came the high point - making Pisco Sours and ceviche! This was at Embarcadero 41. Our eagle-eyed mixologist helped us make this delicious drink, in pairs.
Now that we were relaxed, we sat down with all the fixings for ceviche.
No flame required - the lime juice cooks the white fish. Yum!

We thought we were through, but no... now we had lunch. This restaurant was right next to the first ruins we saw, Huaca Pucllana. As many stars or points as there are for this tour from Lima Gourmet Company.

Here's another wonderful Lima event - the fountains with light show. A huge park full of moving fountains, some that you can play in, and all with lights and music!

Here's a video I made:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbnUWhdvl2w&feature=youtu.be
Do you hear the kids having fun?
Through the tunnel of... water?
Full moon!
All the kids have fun here!

Okay, you know I'm a museum freak, so you don't get off without a visit to one or two in Lima.
Peru had many rich cultures before the Incas and the Spanish
Any geeks remember the knot ropes from the TV show Numbers? Here is where they got that idea. The quipus were record-keeping devices.

We move on from Lima in the next post...
