Guerneville, California has trees, lots of fun people, and masks on every face

Time for Deanna's birthday! Every year, she spends it in Guerneville, a couple of hours north of San Francisco, under the trees, along the Russian River, with her friends. Last year, with the virus, she was pretty much on her own, and this year, with the virus still hanging in there, it was different. But it was still full of outdoor fun!

The river had a toxic algae bloom, so no one swam in it, but you could still enjoy it from the surface. If you wanted to swim, the Russian River Resort pool welcomed vaccinated people. We were there every day!

I was really worried about the massive West Coast wildfires. Smoke is getting all the way to the East Coast from them. I asked Deanna to buy some N95 masks to filter the smoke, but it turned out to be unnecessary. Guerneville was smoke-free, even though there was plenty of smoke visible from the plane window as I flew in to SFO.

Well, the masks were not needed for the smoke, but we did need to wear masks everywhere in town. Some places were closed because the folks had COVID-19. It was bad enough that everyone there for the fun weekend got themselves tested as soon as they got back home. Even the bunch who enjoyed the hot tub at her AirBnB tested negative. Big sigh of relief!

For her actual birthday, we drove south on Highway 1 to an oyster bar. The rocky coastline had lots of arches and cliffs to admire, and the oyster bar was worth the trip.

We had a day to enjoy San Francisco before our flight to Vermont.  <3

My friend Cris drove us to the airport in her Tesla 3. My backpack went into the "frunk" - the trunk where the engine of a gas car would be. What a thrill to see another friend in person instead of on a computer screen!
