The Big Day! Whales / Total Eclipse / Birthday!

Finally! It's the day for which Dee and I booked this trip: August 12th. Happy birthday, Dee! The whole solar system celebrates!

Dee took dozens of pictures, then created this video

My goodness, the humpbacks were amazing! We could identify particular whales by their flukes.

Pilla drew what she saw

Our meteorologist, Jay, was having a nervous breakdown the last few days as our ship tried to find a clear spot in the clouds. Scoresby Sund is supposed to have reliable wind from the middle of Greenland outward, keeping the skies clear. But no! Not this time. Luckily for us, we were outside of the sound and could make good time, chasing a chance of seeing the eclipse. Jay (and we) won! We found a spot!

Dee took photos with her telephoto lens. I decided to experience it through my binoculars. Of course, we had eclipse lenses on everything.

Almost to totality

Light clouds made beautiful rainbows

Where's the sun? Hold your breath!

The sun is coming back, after all

Dee capturing the celebration outside

Dee was able to stay outside after totality. What a warm-blooded explorer. She took pictures of our humpbacks calling each other. Hey, you all right over there? They were slapping their pectoral fins. Celebrate! The sun came back!

Meanwhile, we were inside with our Proseccos! Hey, wasn't that great? Celebrate!

But wait!  There was MORE to celebrate on Dee's birthday. The crew started the day by turning our cabin into a disco party room. Music! Balloons! Messages in lights! "Happy Birthday" on the bathroom mirror.

But wait! There's more! Dinner with cake and singing crew!

Couldn't ask for a better birthday!
